just add in, it's something to see senator john mccain talk about the cost of being disagreeable. i covered mccain for a while. i have a lot of respect for him and some genuine affection. but he's not exactly miss congeniality. i think he would say that himself. he thinks if there are certain things you don't worry if people like you, i think that's one of the reasons why in the past he liked hagel. they both have that attitude. whatever it is he believes is sort of interesting to see him use that as a knock against hagel. >> let me tell you me ask both of you. personal politics or policy, what's going on here? >> i would say with someone like mccain, it's a little of both. i think he takes politics very personally. that's something i like about him. but here you're seeing both. i think for a lot of other republicans who are against the hague hagel nomination, it's optics. they're solidifying their own far right credentials going against hagel. ted cruz has made a name for himself with these stunt politics. >> i think it's a little of each in the sense -- what i find interesting is

those who -- john mccain, shall we say, he's probably going to be upset that chuck hagel was there supporting president obama when they were running against one another. you get that. but this is a pretty serious job, tony. this is defense secretary. i mean, do you think that kind of politics, those maybe personal issues should be brought up under these circumstances? >> look, my bias -- jill talked about this earlier about the bias towards the president being able to name the members of his cabinet. i'm a strong believer in this. i don't like the senate holding up the president trying to put his staff in place. i don't think that's what's going to happen here. but in terms of tough grilling at a hearing, these are all grownups. and certainly like i said, chuck hagel has seen it from the other side of the desk for many years. he was a leader of tough questioning of witnesses who sat before him. he's a grownup. he should have been better prepared for it. he should have handled it better. but they cab get through this just fine, i think. >> so just fine, jill, ultimately does hagel g

through, john mccain and others are going to vote against. we had the votes in terms of the cloture vote on friday, on wednesday, rather, in terms of having 58 votes, but now what is this whole issue of the rutgers speech? >> i think it's all about sort of desperate search to find something. usually when you are asking questions about a nominee, and i'm a really big dlooefr believer in oversight and the advisory process, but usually you have a reason to think there's someone there. this is just scouring the kitchen cabinets and seeing if you can find any little dust balls any place, and i think they are just -- you and i have seen it so many times. if you can run out the clock enough, maybe something will come up, and this is just sort of playing for that end of the football game moment of something turning up. he will be confirmed, and i have to say i don't think he performed well at all, to put it mildly, in the hearings. i also think especially this last stretch makes republicans look terrible also. >> let's look at lindsey graham yesterday talking about the rutgers speech and what mo
